Northeast Oregon Area Health Education Center’s application deadline for their high school MedQuest Camp is quickly approaching. There is only a little more than a month left to apply, as student applications must be submitted by March 15th for consideration. Camp will take place from June 18th-22nd on the Eastern Oregon University campus.
All students with a demonstrated interest in healthcare are encouraged to apply. Northeast Oregon AHEC pre-admitted 10 outstanding students who applied by their early acceptance deadline in December, but they still have 25-30 slots left to fill and they will make their final acceptance decisions in March.
They do have scholarship opportunities available for students with a financial need. Students just need to indicate this on their applications to be eligible.

SUMMER HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Summer Health Professions Education Program, is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. Application deadline is February 15, 2018. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.
The University of Washington is one of the hosts and the free program provides airfare/mileage reimbursement, all meals and participant stipends.
MedStars is a week-long residence camp for diverse and underserved high school students in the Cascades East region. MedStars will host 32 high school students each week with preference given to students entering their senior year.
Students will engage with and explore the vast career opportunities available in health care. MedStars inspires and nurtures students’ curiosity to learn about the intricate health care systems through various hands-on activities, learning simulations, daily career speakers and lecture series. Students will leave with a better understanding of health care, and the skills required to succeed in a competitive field.
Activities may include:
Campus visit to Central Oregon Community College and explore allied health programs
Exploring campus life at OSU- Cascades
Campus tour and imaging programs overiew at Oregon Institute of Technology.
Wilderness medicine activities
Engaging with many health care professionals in various fields and specialties of medicine
Participating in hands-on activities to learn about advancing medical technology
MedStars will take place in Bend with students residing in the college dormitory on the OSU-Cascades Campus. Activities are held throughout Central Oregon, with support from local partnerships including St. Charles Health System, Central Oregon Community College, and Volunteers in Medicine. Students are expected to provide their own transportation to and from Bend. Transportation will be provided during the course of the program.
