Coos Bay

Allison Casciato

Allison Casciatois a third year medical student from OHSU serving her 5-week rural clerkship rotation in Coos Bay at North Bend Medical Center with Dr. Jenni DeLeon.

Allison currently lives in Portland and has served previous clerkships in internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, OB/GYN and family medicine.

When asked what she would like to accomplish on this rural rotation, Allison stated, "improve my ability to form comprehensive assessment and plan for patient seen in outpatient setting; gain better understanding of a day in the life of a rural primary care practitioner; and understand the business aspects of managing a medical practice".

Outside of medicine, Allison enjoys running, photography, cooking and baking.

Medical students are sponsored by Area Health Education Center (AHEC) of Southwest Oregon. AHEC provides a stipend for gas and housing for the students while they are serving their 5-week rotation.

Allison's student project while she was on rotation in Coos Bay was titled; "Quality Improvement:  Enhancing effective communication between pediatric healthcare providers and teachers to improve healthcare and educational services with focus on ADHD children".

Cottage Grove

Thiebaut "Bo" Herzog

Bo Herzogis a third year medical student from OHSU serving his 5-week rural clerkship rotation at Cottage Grove Hospital with Dr. Daniel Kranitz.

Bo currently lives in Portland and he has served previous rotations in internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, otolaryngology, surgery and OB/GYN.

When asked what he would like to accomplish on this rural rotation, Bo stated, "a realistic view of medicine outside of a metropolitan center; hands on learning opportunities; and a chance to explore life outside the city".

Outside of medicine, Bo enjoys fitness, outdoors, family, reading and church.

Medical students are sponsored by Area Health Education Center (AHEC) of Southwest Oregon. AHEC provides a stipend for gas while they are serving their 5-week rotation.

Bo's student project while he was on rotation in Cottage Grove was titled: "Improving Door-to-Balloon Times for STEMI Transfers from a Rural ED".

Florence

Christopher Brown

Christopher Brownis a third year medical student from OHSU serving his 5-week rural clerkship rotation at PeaceHealth Medical Group in Florence.

Christopher currently lives in Portland.  He has served previous clerkships in medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, OB/GYN and family medicine.

When asked what he would like to accomplish on this rural rotation, Christopher stated, “prospective of the rural patient; procedural skills of the rural physician; and sense of community service and involvement”.

Outside of medicine, Christopher enjoys hunting, fishing, wine and great food.

Chris' student project while he was on rotation in Florence was titled: "Diet and Obesity in Florence, OR".

Grants Pass

Elyssa Ackerman

Elyssa Ackermanis a Rural Scholars student from OHSU serving her 14-week rural clerkship rotation at Three Rivers Hospital in Grants Pass with Dr. David Abdun-Nur.

Elyssa currently lives in Portland and has served previous clerkships in internal medicine, psychiatric, pediatrics, pre-operative medicine clinic, OB/GYN, and surgery.

When asked what she would like to accomplish on this rural rotation, Elyssa stated, "confirm my specialty choice (family practice vs. general surgery) by practicing in an environment similar to where I plan to work after residency; hone in my assessment skills and independently formulate a plan; and become more comfortable with general office procedures, physical exam skills, and to do as much as possible!"

Outside of medicine, Elyssa enjoys running (training for ½ and full marathon), rock climbing/bouldering, throwing the ball for her 4-month old German Shepard, baking/eating new desserts, planning her wedding for August 2013, and vacationing in National Parks.

Elyssa's student project while she was on rotation in Grants Pass was titled "Lactation and Medication".

Medford

Reed Cope

Reed Copeis a third year medical student from OHSU serving his 5-week rural clerkship rotation at La Clinica in Medford with Dr. Ken Rhee.

Reed currently lives in Portland. He has served previous clerkships in internal medicine, family medicine, surgery, OB/GYN, pediatrics and psychiatry.

When asked what he would like to accomplish on this rural rotation, Reed stated, "learn more about what practicing in a rural setting is like; get hands-on experience working directly with an attending and caring for patients; and determine if practicing, at least partly, in a rural setting is something I want for my future career".

Outside of medicine, Reed enjoys basketball, soccer, chess, teaching, tutoring, physics, working with children and spending time with loved ones.

Reed's student project while he was on roation in Medford was titled: "Bringing Costs to Light at La Clinica".

Reedsport

Michael Layoun

Michael Layounis a third year medical student from OHSU serving his 5-week rural rotation clerkship at Dunes Family Health Care in Reedsport with Dr. Rio Lion.

Michael currently lives in Portland. He has served a previous clerkship in family medicine.

When asked what he would like to accomplish on this rural rotation, Michael stated, "become more comfortable with procedures in the primary care setting; have the opportunity to learn about emergency medicine in the rural community; and be more efficient with collecting focused patient histories".

Outside of medicine, Michael enjoys jazz/classical guitar, lifting weights, and running really long distances.
