The Health Careers Summer Academy was a program for high school students who have demonstrated an active interest in a healthcare occupation. Nine students from Jackson County were selected to participate in the program that includes challenging problem-based learning activities using the Club M.E.D. Discovery Journal, spending time with health professionals, and receiving CPR and first aid training. AHEC of Southwest Oregon, the Southern Oregon ESD, the Job Council, and Health Careers Alliance of Southern Oregon (HCASO) received a Regional Capacity Grant from the Department of Education for this three-week program in July.
Students that participated attend Eagle Point High School, Crater High School, North Medford High School, South Medford High School and Brigham Young University. These students shared the following about the academy:
"...sharing my interests with others..."
"Exploring the different career paths in health care"
"I LOVEDdoing all the hands-on activities such as tours, CPR and First-Aid certification, SIM Lab. The tours were AWESOME!"
"...meeting people in the profession that shared their own personal experiences and advice..."
"The program was a great learning experience and I enjoyed meeting new people and learning new things...it was better than I ever imaged!"
