Ten students and two counselors from the AHEC-SW region attended MedStars 2008 from July 15th-19th. Those chosen to attend this year were:

- Lyanna Diaz, Rogue River, Rogue River High School
- Tyler Harwood, Sutherlin, Sutherlin High School
- Annie Johnson, Myrtle Creek, South Umpqua High School
- John Konieczny, III, Grants Pass, Grants Pass High School
- Aubree Parmerlee, Brookings, Brookings High School
- Tiffany Perry, Grants Pass, Grants Pass High School
- Sabrina Pol, Medford, South Medford High School
- Garrett Garceau, Grants Pass, Counselor
- Cori Wouters, Central Point, Counselor
Also in attendance were AHEC-SW staff members Raj Rambob, Executive Director and Amy Nelson, Education Coordinator. All students were given a full scholarship by AHEC to attend this event.
MedStars was an intensive five-day event held at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland. Students participated in hands-on activities related to healthcare careers such as surgery skills, vital signs and other clinical skills, and dentistry. Students also visited the Oregon Primate Research Center, Shriners’ Hospital for Children and the Simulation Laboratory or the Poison Control Center.
In addition, students attended programs by a parasitologist, music therapists, Donate Life Northwest, Oregon Brain Awareness, college representatives and osteopathic physicians. The final activity featured the students, who gave presentations to their families highlighting what they learned during their experiences that week.
