What is MedStars Health Careers Honors Experience?
MedStars is a summer residential experience at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) designed to help high school students learn more about their options in pursuing a health care career. MedStars is sponsored by the Oregon Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program Office.
Who Should Attend MedStars?
- High school students who have completed their junior or senior year of high school (ages 16-19) are eligible
- Students from rural and underserved communities who have demonstrated their interest in a health career by participating in other health careers programs or activities
- Student acceptance is based on academic performance and strength of application (family need, rural location, letters of recommendation and healthcare related experiences)
What Will I Do at MedStars?
- Engage in hands-on activities to explore a number of professions within the healthcare field
- Gain a broader understanding of the education, training and work environment of healthcare providers from a number of disciplines
- Interact with health science professionals and students who are based at OHSU
- Participate in team activities with fellow MedStars participants from around the state
- Have fun, meet new people who share your interests, stay in a college dorm, experience the academic setting of OHSU and explore Portland
