Great Discoveries is a workshop designed to put fun, interactive science curriculum into the hands of elementary and middle school teachers. Written by Michael Jaeger and Carol Lauritzen of Eastern Oregon University, this curriculum combines science, health and literacy to meet the Oregon Common Curriculum Goals for both science and health. Each unit in the curriculum explores the human body through inquiry-based hands-on experiments and lessons that delve into both life and/or physical science concepts. Teachers will be able to connect their students to health topics such as hearing, vision, nutrition, human locomotion and prosthetics, and microbes.
During the workshop, teachers will explore each of the five units in depth. Teachers will leave the workshop with all of the materials to instruct one complete unit. The materials for the other units may be easily purchased at a local grocery or hardware store.
Meals and dormitory-style lodging are provided during the workshop. Upon completion, each participant will receive a $250 stipend. Once implementation and evaluation of the curriculum have occurred in the home classroom, each participant will receive an additional $250. Mileage will be reimbursed from the home town of each participant to the workshop site. Graduate credits may be purchased through Eastern Oregon University (EOU) at the individual’s expense.
